About the place Gata de Gorgos

Gata de Gorgos is located about 75 meters above sea level and owes its name to the river (bed) the Gorgos that runs through the municipality. This is sometimes called Rio Jalon and flows into the Mediterranean Sea in Javea.

In the past, agriculture was the main source of income for the village. Here, in particular, wheat, (wine) grapes, reed, olives, barley, almonds were grown. Until the mid-20th century this was the most important financial sector until the demand for a (second) home increased. The quality of the land also deteriorated, meaning that a lot of land is now being used for new homes. Tourism is currently a very important source of income.

What can you do in Gata de Gorgos?

The center of Gata de Gorgos is surrounded by a church that is definitely worth a visit. Here is also a square with some bars, restaurants and shops.

The cultivation of reed can mainly be seen in the handmade articles for tourism. They make hats, baskets, etc. out of this. Because many stores display their products outside, the village has been nicknamed "the Bazaar of the Costa Blanca".

In addition, the village is also good at making handmade guitars and articles from ceramics. You can even take a look at this factory, where you can see how these instruments are built by hand in the traditional way.

The market of Gata de Gorgos

Gata is also known for the market - this takes place every Friday between 8 a.m. and 2 p.m. All kinds of articles are sold here: clothing, fruit, vegetables, flowers, plants, shoes, bags, etc.

Spain is not Spain without a fiesta

In Spain, not a day goes by without a national holiday. Similarly in Gata de Gorgos many fiestas take place. From July 25 to August 6 there is a celebration in honor of Jesus Christ and August 6 is the highlight. On this day every villager is free and there are festive activities such as bullfighting, dance performances, fireworks shows and offering of flowers.

The Correfoc party is also worth a look. This is a great and fiery (literally) party, with which the evil spirits must be chased away. Click on this link for a nice impression.
